How This Calculator Works

Energy Required

Miles driven ÷ efficiency (mi/kWh) gives annual kWh needed. This varies by vehicle - a Tesla Model 3 uses ~4 mi/kWh.

Cost Calculation

kWh × tariff rate for each charging method. Petrol cost uses litres consumed at your MPG × price per litre.

Real Savings

We compare all methods side-by-side so you can see exactly how much an EV tariff and home charger would save you.

Calculator FAQ

At the average UK electricity rate of 24p/kWh, charging at home costs around 7p per mile. For an average driver doing 7,400 miles per year, that is roughly £500-£600 per year. With an off-peak EV tariff at 7p/kWh, this drops to around £150-£200 per year.
Home charging is significantly cheaper. At 24p/kWh vs 65p/kWh at rapid public chargers, home charging costs less than half. Even standard public chargers at 40-50p/kWh are much more expensive than home charging.
The average UK driver saves £800-£1,200 per year on fuel by switching from petrol to electric. With an off-peak EV tariff, savings can exceed £1,500 per year. Maintenance costs are also lower for EVs.
Octopus Intelligent Go is one of the most popular, offering 7.5p/kWh for 6 hours overnight. OVO Charge Anytime and EDF GoElectric also offer competitive off-peak rates. These tariffs require a smart meter and compatible charger. Check our tariff comparison page for the latest rates.
